Evening with Dave Moore of Schug Carneros Estate Winery
October 2nd - Dave Moore of Schug Carneros Estate Winery in Sonoma Valley
Although commonly referred to by wine lovers as “Schug,” the estate’s formal name is Schug Carneros Estate Winery. Its roots trace back to a centuries-old tradition: Walter Schug grew up amid his family’s Pinot Noir vineyards in Germany’s Rheingau region, where vines were first planted around the 12th century. Walter emigrated to California. He began his career managing vineyards for E&J Gallo and later joined Joseph Phelps Vineyards, where he crafted the state’s first proprietary Bordeaux-style blend, Insignia, and introduced California’s first varietal Syrah. His Insignia earned the first-ever 99-point score from Robert Parker
When Phelps discontinued Pinot Noir production in 1979, Walter persisted with his own small bottlings. By 1980, he established Schug Carneros Estate Winery in Sonoma’s Carneros region—an ideal site for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Today Schug is known for producing world-class chardonnay and pinot noirs.
